Belt modeling in LS-DYNA

Belt modelling has evolved through the years from using 1D belt elements to using 2D belt elements, and also hybrid 1D/2D variations. Currently the 2D belt is the most commonly used and recommended method. However, with a demand for a more detailed and accurate belt model, with decreasing element sizes, problems have been noted. In particular issues related to the belt loaded in bending and during unloading. The belt may collapse to easily or instability/robustness issues may arise. Recently, these issues have been addressed by adding new features to LS-DYNA that improve the capability of 2D belts.  In particular the new possibility to add bending stiffness to the membrane 2D. belt through coating will be discussed.
